- Aim and Alignment -
The
level top-plane makes the Thomas Golf technology possible. The
indicator bar is parallel with the target line and level
to the ground. This gives the golfer the
advantage of tri-axial alignment.
More than 85% of
golfers have chronic alignment and ball position
problems. The classic case is the golfer who aligns
to the right or left of the target, then pushes or pulls the ball to the target,
thus creating a swing fault. The eyes see the curved face and top of the
club head, this is very difficult to aim correctly. Because the mind's eye sees the true line, an unconscious swing fault occurs in an attempt
to correct for the poor alignment. We
end up blaming errant shots on our swing, rather
than our poor alignment.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "Most
golf shots are missed before the club ever
moves". You can have the best swing
in the world but, if your alignment has you
aiming off target, you have little chance
for success!
1. If you line up right of the target, the
only way to get the ball to the target is
to swing over the top or from an in/out path
rolling the hands over to shut the face down
through impact.
2. If you line up left of the target, then
you will either swing out/in holding on to
the clubface open or drop the golf club inside
on the initial downswing to get a sensation
of swinging a more in-to-out path. |

What is alignment and how does it affect
your golf swing? Just like the tires on your
car, you must have everything aligned properly
in the set-up to make the golf swing work
properly. If one of the tires is out of alignment
on your car, it would pull to the right or
left. It's the same idea with the golf swing.
The exact type of shot is determined by the
length and loft of the club. But, the swing
path is determined by the alignment of your
club and body. When a student comes to me
with a swing path error (i.e. a slice) the
first thing I look at is their set-up. If
the student is aligned too far to the left
of the target, they will likely create an
outside-in swing path and hit a pull or slice.
If someone is aligned too far to the right
of their target, they will either hit a push
or hook because of the inside-out swing path.
